When I moved into a house in Sydney's Ryde 20 years ago at the start of winter, there was a large bush in the front yard with blindingly white huge camellia flowers. There was a tall tree with pink flowers in the backyard, the flowers were simpler, not so lush, but they were also camellias. In winter, these shrubs and trees delight the eyes of eastern Australians with flowers in all shades of red, pink and white. They are not only for me. Camellias are one of the most loved flowers in the world. There are about 200 species and thousands of varieties in the world. Sometimes the camellia is called the winter rose or the queen of winter flowers.
