Alexandra Osipovna Smirnova (née Rosset) was one of the most prominent women in 19th century Russia. She was a close friend of Pushkin, Zhukovsky, Gogol, Lermontov and a whole galaxy of other brilliant personalities of her century. Emperor Nicholas I treated her very favorably, and among her admirers were Russian nobles, foreign ambassadors and simply brilliant young officers.
