On May 10, 1835, a small group of settlers from Launceston, the northern capital of Tasmania, set off on the 23-ton Rebecca schooner to Australia in search of new lands. The expedition included John Batman, the leader of the expedition, the captain of the schooner, his assistant, six more white people and seven indigenous Australians.
