On April 19, 1770, exactly 250 years ago, the 41-year-old captain James Cook aboard the ship Endeavour during his first voyage reached the south-east of Australia. He landed in the area of the modern Kurnell Peninsula, where a monument was erected in honor of this event on the landing site, in the Sydney Bay of Botany Bay. This was the first recorded visit to the eastern coast of the southern continent by Europeans.
