A total of 1200 young mathematicians from 19 countries participated in the final round of the International Mathematical Olympiad (HKIMO) which took place in Hong Kong beteen 30th August to 2nd September 2019.

15 students between the ages of 6 years to 16 years represented Australia at the Olympiad. Despite the long flight, hot and humid weather and very different cultural surroundings, they managed to produce an outstanding result for Australia. They won 1 gold medal, 8 bronze medals and 2 silver medals. The winner of the gold medal has received an invitation to take part in the super final (WIMO 2019) in Tokyo, Japan in December 2019.

Besides the mathematical exams, the program included educational excursions and entertaining activities. The children had a great time and made friends with children from other countries. Mathematics proved to be a wonderful reason for making the trip so successful. We are now starting preparations for the next round and hope to take part in the finals which will take place in Thailand in April 2020.

The next round of the Olympiad will be held in the WA Russian school at Perth Modern during October 2019. All Australian children of school age from all states and territories are invited to participate and qualify to become part of our fantastic Australian Olympiad team. Please, join this intellectual journey which we call “Mathematical Tourism”.

The Olympiad coordinator in Australia is a Maths Teacher in the WA Russian School, Andrey Kuzmin.
